St. Uriel

The Archangel Uriel window depicts an angel with a sword of flames and a shield reflecting the burning sun. Uriel watches over the sun. He is called "the flame of God." Uriel watches over Hades and will eventually lead the Titans (the gods who rebelled against Zeus) to judgment. Uriel was the archangel stationed at the gate of Eden to keep Adam and Eve from returning to eat of the tree of life and death. Uriel warned Noah of the impending flood, and led Abraham out of the war and famine that had engulfed the city of Ur. Uriel was the dark angel that wrestled with Jacob and gave him the name of Israel. It will be Uriel who, at judgment, shall break down the gates of hell and free all of the souls who had died in the flood of Noah.
This window is dedicated to the glory of God and in thanksgiving for the life of Dorothy C. Coulter, an active member of this parish and a leader in the Episcopal Church in Iowa, who died in Columbia, South Carolina, at the age of ninety-one. The window is a memorial given by her son, Paul McCabe.
