THE
REVEREND SEAN LABAT, Rector
I was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1970, but don't let
that fool you. My parents were displaced Minnesotans who
happened to be stationed in San Antonio with the Air Force.
I spent most of my childhood through college in Minneapolis.
After graduating from college I went to seminary in New
York. Following seminary, I moved to Chicago both to do
pastoral ministry and to continue my graduate work in urban
studies and history. I've been an Associate Pastor for several
years (at another St. Michael's Church, in Burbank, Illinois).
During that time I also served as an interim in one of the
chapels at Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Upon finishing
graduate school, I became Senior Pastor of the LaSalle County
Episcopal Ministry (LCEM). The LCEM is a cluster of four
congregations in north central Illinois. Currently, I look
forward to moving to Columbia!
I am married to Mary Riley. She is finishing law school
at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb; she will be able
to move to Columbia in May. She is also an anthropologist
who has traveled to Laos and Vietnam several times to conduct
interviews for an ongoing project with the Department of
Pharmacology at U of I, Chicago. She is very interested
in centering prayer.
As for my interests, I run almost every day, I enjoy reading
not only theology but also history of cities, i.e., how
did people get to be where they are and who they are. I
view my ministry as a pastor as helping people discover
their ministries both in the Church and in daily life; helping
them find the tools they need to exercise those ministries.
All of us have ministry and all of us are priests by our
baptism. To what ministries is our Lord calling us, not
just in church, but in our families, at work, and with our
neighbors?
